2012 Test Dates: To Be Announced

Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test

  • The first test to prepare students for the SAT.
  • Now includes the new critical reading section, enhanced math, and writing (no essay).
  • A shortened version of the SAT (2 hours, 10 min), which is used to qualify students as National Merit Scholarship semi-finalists.
  • The test is scored on a scale of 20-80, so the top score based on the three subtests is 240. The top 2% of students become Merit Scholarship nominees, and the top 1% win Merit Scholarships.

We offer both classes and one-on-one instruction for the PSAT.

We recommend a minimum of eight hours each for the verbal and math.

GRE PDF Print E-mail

Effective August 1, 2011 the structure of the GRE test will be changed.

The GRE revised General Test places a greater emphasis on higher-level cognitive skills.  Featuring new types of questions, the new Verbal Reasoning section of the revised test more closely reflects the kind of thinking you'll do in graduate or business school, and better measures your ability to understand what you read and how you apply your reasoning skills.

Computer-Based revised GRE

The Computer Adapted GRE contains six or seven sections:

• One Analytical writing section
> Includes 2 writing tasks, which always come first in the test.
> You are allowed 30 minutes per task.
A strong vocabulary background is essential.

• Two Verbal Reasoning sections
> approximately 20 questions per section.
A quick overview of each section is recommended before you begin. Here's what is new for the Verbal Reasoning section:  Antonyms and analogies have been removed from the test, so there are no questions that test vocabulary out-of-context.  New Sentence Equivalence questions test your ability to reach a conclusion about how a sentence should be completed while focusing on the meaning of the whole sentence.  There are more Reading Comprehension questions on the test, including new types of questions, such as selecting multiple correct answer choices instead of just one, or highlighting a sentence within a reading passage to answer the question.

• Two Quantitative Reasoning sections
> approximately 20 questions per section
> multiple-choice questions
> numeric-entry questions
The content is based on high school level math.

• One unscored section
> typically a Verbal Reasoning or Quantitative Reasoning section, that may appear at any point in the test.

• One research section
> this will always be at the end of the test.

Instruction available at Focus on Learning Center:

One-on-one instruction is the most beneficial and cost effective preparation. We use your previous GRE score or an on-line test taken at the Focus on Learning Center as a base score. Your individualized program will be set up based on
• your goal score
• the requirements of your graduate program
• your consultation
(the program may range between 4-20 hrs with trained subject specialist-coaches)
