cute girl with booksOur reading instruction is not a one-size-fits all program. Experienced reading teachers recognize that children learn to read at different rates and that their individual learning styles affect how they learn.

We individualize instruction for every student based on his or her learning style, grade level, and interests. Our goal is to build good reading comprehension using both classroom and supplemental materials. Students are always encouraged to take books home for additional practice.

Speed Reading PDF Print E-mail
Good reading skills are fundamental for school success. Many students struggle because they read too slowly. Slowspeed_reading_250w readers are inefficient readers whose comprehension suffers. A proficient reader should have a base reading rate of 400-600 words per minute and be able to skim and scan texts at over 1000 wpm.

However, the average student and adult reads between 170-220 wpm, and many readers have an even slower reading rate.  The result is that reading becomes a chore and a source of ongoing frustration.

Students who read too slowly spend over twice as long completing assignments as their classmates who have learned efficient and fast reading strategies. Many slow readers are also handicapped on tests because they have difficulty finishing in the allotted time.  Students who read too slowly are not able to complete the reading passages on tests such as the ACT, SAT, or GRE.  As a result, their reading  scores do not reflect their potential.

This speed reading class is for students who are good but slow readers: the readers who perform well on reading tasks as long as they have unlimited time.  The course teaches students

  • double their current reading rate
  • vary their reading rate according to their purpose for reading and the content of the material.
  • improve comprehension and recall
  • gain confidence
  • get control over their reading tasks
Slow reading is a bad habit that can be broken, and students will learn the strategies they need to develop new a new and much improved habit.
