
ACT Test (Taken Junior or Senior year)
- The most frequently taken test, the ACT is now accepted by every college and university in the US.
- The test includes four sections: English, Math, Reading Comprehension, and Science. It is more curriculum based than the SAT. The writing section is optional.
- The score range is 1-36, and the average score in Missouri is just over 21. The University of Missouri requires a 25.
- Students who earn a 31 or higher receive a $2000 / year Bright Flight Scholarship to any school in Missouri.
- Students with IEP's or 504 Plans may take extended-time tests. Check with your school counselor about which tests will allow extended time.
- All Columbia classes will be held at Focus on Learning Center, Inc.

A study reports results for a four week, 20 hour ACT coaching class offered at a large Midwestern high school:students who participated in the coaching class increased their composite ACT score by 1.5 points over their previously highest ACT composite score. A comparable group at the same high school who did not participate in the coaching achieved an increase of 0.65 points, indicating an effect of coaching of 0.85 points.

The role of standardized tests in general and college admission tests in particular is a hot topic for educators, administrators and others evaluating the outcomes of educational institutions. The importance of the ACT scores for both students and institutions is acknowledged, and the test preparation industry has spawned into a mulit- billion dollar enterprise. Yet objective evidence supporting the effectiveness of couaching for college preparatory tests, including the ACT, is virtually nonexistent.
