Dr. Chippendale is the founder and President of Focus on Learning Center. She has worked for over forty years with students of all ages and needs to enhance their reading, writing, and learning skills. She also coaches and conducts teacher workshops for ACT preparation. Dr. Chippendale’s goal is to help her students become confident, capable, and successful life-long learners.

Dr. Chippendale does Psychoeducational testing and works with parents and school professionals to develop I.E.P. and 504 Programs for special needs students.

In her spare time, Dr. Chippendale enjoys reading, music, traveling, hiking, and spoiling her grandchildren

Dr. Chippendale also provides Psychoeducational testing and ACT preparation. A founding member of the Gifted Association of Missouri, she remains a member of GAM, TAWL, LDA and ADD. She graduated from Oberlin College, earned a M.A. in English literature at the University of Wisconsin, and a PhD in reading, linguistics and learning disabilities at the University of Missouri.

Gary Moss, Ph.D.

Dr. Moss has over 30 years of teaching, research, and test preparation experience. He is a widely recognized specialist in ACT/SAT coaching, and his research examines the effectiveness of test coaching. Dr. Moss coaches students and presents teacher workshops for ACT preparation.

Dr. Moss spends his spare time running and biking and is active in his church’s youth and music programs.

Dr. Moss graduated magna cum laude from the University of Missouri- St. Louis and received his Ph.D. form the University of Missouri- Columbia.

Dr. Moss has taught on both the high school and college levels. He is currently also on the faculty of William Woods University and works extensively in St. Louis.

One of Dr. Moss's specialties is tutoring via skype, very helpful with ACT Test Prep, etc.




Julie Melynk, Ph.D.

Dr. Julie Melnyk received her BA in English and Mathematics summa cum laude from Haverford College,
her MPhil from Oxford University, and her PhD in English from the University of Virginia. She has over
twenty-five years of experience teaching at the high school and college level and is certified to teach
in Missouri. She currently serves as Assistant Teaching Professor of English at MU, offering three
undergraduate literature courses each semester. A member of Phi Beta Kappa, she is actively involved
with the local chapter and has served as president. She is the author of Victorian Religion: Faith and Life
in Britain (Praeger, 2008). She and her husband, a professor of philosophy at MU, have two sons, one
now at NYU, the other attending high school in Columbia.

Tom has been on the FOL faculty for six years teaching mathematics, science, study skills, and ACT prep. His goal is to help his students achieve success in school and help them prepare for college admissions.  He has many students he has seen throughout the years.
Tom is a professional photographer who also enjoys cycling, hiking, and gardening.
Tom graduated from the University of Missouri- Columbia with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics and has been a vital member of Focus on Learning Center, Inc. since 2007.

Justin has been teaching at FOL faculty for five years. He works with students from junior high through college teaching math, statistics, and ACT prep. Justin teaches our highest level calculus and statistics classes.
Justin holds a B.A. in mathematics from the University of Missouri and has over 10 years of teaching experience.

Beth has been teaching at FOL for two years and works primarily with students in the elementary and middle grades in reading, writing, math, and study skills. Beth recognizes in the importance of integrating reading and writing and also utilizes the Great Books curriculum.

Beth holds a B.A. degree in Early Childhood Development from the University of Missouri- Columbia and a M.A. in Elementary and Middle School Administration from the University of Missouri- Kansas City. She has over 11 years of teaching experience.

Bill has recently joined the FOL team and will be working with students from middle school through college. He specializes in sciences, languages, ESL, Chinese, study skills, and test prep.

When he has free time, he enjoys spending time with his family, reading, and lifting weights.

Bill earned a B.S. in Biology from M.S.U., an M.A. in linguistics, and an M.A. in Asian Studies from the University of Oregon. He has taught in public schools and is also a Mentor/Tutor in the Total Person Program at M.U. Bill has over 20 years teaching experience.

Lori Reese, B.A., M.A., M.F.A

Lori joined the FOL faculty to implement its Great Books reading program, a proven curriculum that emphasizes inquiry, comprehension, and interpretation. She is also an experienced writing teacher who works with students on the fundamentals of language and composition, class papers, and college essays. Lori prepares students for the ACT, SAT, and AP tests.
Lori is an avid reader and writer who in her spare time participates in mindfulness practice and yoga.
Lori earned a B.A. in Literature and Philosophy from the University of Chicago, an M.F.A. from the University of North Carolina, and an M.A. in English and Creative Writing from Hollins University. Lori is a professional writer who has authored numerous articles in TIME Magazine (Asia) and Entertainment Weekly. She has ten years experience teaching at both the high school and college levels.
