Pre-Algebra Essentials (7-9)
Bridges the gap between Connected Math or Integrated 1 and Algebra I for   
students enrolling in Algebra I in the fall.
 Topics include fractions, decimals,  percents, basic linear equations, introductory graphing, factors and multiples,
and exponents.  This class will also show students how to
study for math tests.

Spotlight on Fractions, Decimals, and Percents (5-9)
Teaches mastery of essential math skills by combining creative hands-on activities and many practice problems.   This class will immerse students so they become proficient in using these fundamental operations.

Study Skills (6-8)
Teaches students to study smarter; this unique class includes organization, note taking, test taking, and comprehension skills, and applies them to grade-appropriate English, science, social studies, and math classes.  This comprehensive, hands-on class teaches skills and provides students multiple opportunities to apply them to specific content areas.  Students receive planners, notebooks, and folders and learn to organize them.  They practice taking notes, developing  study guides for tests, and learning strategies for multiple choice and essay tests.  Students will also work on strategies for improving comprehension.

Focus on Vocabulary Development (6-8)
Develops essential vocabulary for reading and writing.  A lack of vocabulary background leads to confusion during classroom discussions and reading comprehension.  This class will teach

  •  Strategies for learning new words by using
     
- Context cues during reading.
      
- A dictionary and thesaurus properly.
  •  Secrets for retaining and applying new vocabulary.
  •  Vocabulary to enrich writing and enhance comprehension.
 
•  Strategies for reducing spelling errors.

Reading Comprehension (7 - 8)
Teaches strategies for improving reading comprehension across the curriculum. 
Students will use selections from literature, social studies, and science and learn to

  •  Develop a purpose for reading each selection.
  •  Use contextual cues to help define unfamiliar words.
  •  Use syllabication to decode new words.
  •  Write sentence-level summaries of paragraphs to identify the main
       idea.
  •  Write paragraph-level summaries of selections to differentiate main
       ideas from supporting details.
  •  Learn to differentiate literal- level from inferential-level questions.
  •  Recognize how the structures of texts (eg., differences between
      narratives and expository texts) influence comprehension.

Students will select a book to read on their own for pleasure.

Writing Essentials (6-8)
Students explore and practice all aspects of writing necessary for school, including pre-writing, outlining, drafting, revising, and editing. 
Middle school and junior high students must know how to develop constructed responses, perform well on short answer tests, and write essays and research papers.  Students will

  •  Brainstorm and organize techniques for pre-writing
 
•  Develop strategies for essay writing
 
•  Practice outlining, drafting, revising and editing constructed responses   
      and essays.

Work through the steps of planning, researching, writing, and editing a
    short research paper.

College Prep Writing (9-12)
College-bound students learn to go beyond the "5-paragrah” model" to write longer essays and research papers.
This class is specifically designed for the college-bound student and participants will learn strategies to improve their writing of

  •  Research papers
 
•  Essay exams
 
•  The “extended” response paper
 
•  College application essays

Students will learn effective revision and editing practices.

College Prep Vocabulary (9-12)
Develops vocabulary that is essential for reading comprehension and ACT/SAT exams.
Academic success follows naturally once a student has acquired a command of the English language.  Enhanced vocabulary knowledge will dramatically improve both reading comprehension and writing skills.  This class will focus on

  •  Strategies for using contextual cues.
 
•  Retention and application of new vocabulary, using the SAT’s “Hit Parade” vocabulary   
      list.
 
•  The basics of Greek and Latin affixes.
 
•  Using vocabulary in writing.

College Prep Study Skills (9-12)
Teaches essential time management, note taking, and test taking skills necessary for college success. 
Students develop weekly schedules for managing their time.  They receive a weekly planner, three-ring binders, dividers, and folders and learn to organize them.  The hands-on class gives students the opportunity to practice

  •  Keeping a date book.
 
•  Taking class lecture and presentation notes – learning how to pick out the important  
       points.
 
•  Highlighting effectively.
 
•  Developing double-column notes for test study guides.
 
•  Test-taking strategies for objective and essay tests.

Students apply these skills to English, science, socials studies, and math materials.

Speed Reading (10-12 & College)
Teaches strategies for doubling one’s reading rate and improving comprehension. 
Many college-bound students have a reading rate between 180-220 w.p.m. when they should have a base rate between 400-600 w.p.m.  This class shows students how to become proficient and effective readers by varying their reading rates according to the purpose for reading and textual demands.  Students practice by using a wide range of materials.

 PSAT and ACT Test Preparation (10-12)

National Merit Scholars’ Academy
For high-achieving students  vying for the prestigious Merit Scholarship. Combines vocabulary development, content review, and test-taking strategies.
This class will use authentic PSAT tests to teach strategies for the verbal and math tests.  Students will take multiple practice tests at home. 

     2 weeks, 24 hours, $760
     M - Th, July 28 - August 7
     9:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.

    Final 4 - hour review is the week before the October test.

ACT Math Review (10-12)
Presents the major topics included on the ACT math test and provides plenty of practice using problems from past tests. For students who fear the ACT math section because they lack the necessary background. 
This class is intended for students who need and want more practice in math than is available in the standard ACT preparatory classes.  The comprehensive math review is valuable for both the ACT and school math classes.

ACT Super Class (10-12)
Our most comprehensive and guaranteed ACT prep class that includes a full-length practice test and post-test review. 
This class includes a comprehensive review of the English grammar and punctuation and math found on the test.  Students set their target scores and work to achieve them using workbooks and  4-5 ACT practice tests.  Student who do not gain two points receive an additional class for free.
